A Good Idea Gone Bad?
When I first saw this idea a few years ago I thought it was nuts - but investors were throwing money at it.
Looks like the cat cloning idea did not catch on.Michael
Wanna buy a cloned cat? No one else did, either. The kitty cloning company Genetic Savings & Clone has closed. Because there was little demand for cloned cats, which cost between $32,000 and $50,000, the company is no longer accepting new orders.
Not surprisingly, the Humane Society is thrilled by the company’s demise.
I did a story about the company nearly two years ago, when they brought a couple of kitties to a Cat Show in Houston. I felt a little weird doing the story, and had a hard time believing the company when it said “hundreds of thousands of customers” were interested in cloning their pets. I think consumers are sophisticated enough to know that pets are part-genes, part-environment, and probably cannot be duplicated.
Here’s one of the company’s original, donor cats.
